As some of you are aware of, I’ve been involved with the recent License Plate Referendum and Income Tax Credit Reduction Referendum issues concerning Mayor Tony Krasienko’s “City of Lorain Investment Plan”. These events marked the third petition drive I’ve been involved with in the last year., the first being the LCS board member recall petition last summer. I’ll consider myself a veteran………veteran volunteer, that is. I’ve got a good idea of what it takes to volunteer now, thanks to this recent effort.
I talked to many people during these efforts, and learned alot about the heartbeat of Lorain. And that’s one strong heartbeat I may add. In general, a great number of citizens love Lorain and are proud to call it home. Some could give two shit’s about it or it’s people, but those are few and far apart from the majority, who really do care. What I’ve learned, and this is just my opinion, is that the citizens are tired of paying more to continue living in a city that keeps waking up every morning in worse shape than the day before. Their tired of seeing money wasted, and boy we know how to waste money here in Lorain.
I got involved because I feel a tax should be put to a vote of the people, and not just a handfull of council members. Yes, we elect those officials to watch after our city, but we are the checks and balance to council’s actions. Both of these issues were forever taxes, meaning, you’ll pay them as long as you live and breathe in Lorain. Period. It is estimated to generate $3 million annually from the Income Tax Credit Reduction and $750,000.00 annually from the $15.00 License Plate Tax. Now, I ask, if the city is only $1.5 million in the red, why must we enact two Forever taxes? What happens to that money when the deficit is gone?
While some people feel if you can’t hold them accountable, you grille em’, while some will even say you can vote them out of office. That still doesn’t put that money back in my pocket, where it belongs. I don’t want Tony Krasienko voted out of office, I want him to succeed. Gosh folks, we’ve had failures in that office for many years and I would really like to see this city turned around on Tony’s watch. I just don’t want Tony to tax the crap out of me and not my neighbor. Tony wants a tax, propose one that’s equal for all, not just those working outside of Lorain, and put it on the ballot himself. Why pit citizen against citizen? That’s what the income tax credit is doing. I actually had a 40+ year friend tell me he didn’t give a shit how much it cost me, as long as it doesn’t cost him anything. I must ask our mayor, is that moving our city forward? Is his plan in the best interest of the citizenry?
